The 5 Things Habit

Sometimes it is extremely difficult to stay on track with your major goals.

The big ugly goals that just seem so huge it is impossible to see the full path to achieving them are the ones that most people end up just losing track of. Despite reading the goals on a daily basis, you lose the drive and motivation to keep pushing on some days.

When you skip a few days of push it is tough to get started again. And then the goal just slips away.

Recently I was reading a book called The Ultimate Sales Machine: Turbocharge Your Business with Relentless Focus on 12 Key Strategies by Chet Holmes, and one of the first strategies in the book covers a time management technique that I have adopted on a daily basis to help me get stuff done.

I’ve also found the technique incredible effective for helping me move towards my goals quicker than before.

Each evening before I finish up, I’ll sit down in a quiet area where I can review what I have achieved during the day and preview what I wish to get completed the next day.

I’ll write down 5 or 6 things that I will KNOW without a doubt I will get done the next day. Each item must be related to my major goals in some way and even if the task is small, because I discipline myself to complete ALL the tasks, I know I am going to keep moving forward towards my goals.

The thing is momentum is essential to keeping on track with your goals. Even if the tasks are small, the momentum I build from completing that task WITHOUT fail is going to help me get to my goal faster!

  1. I make sure I have my major goals written down somewhere. I review these first.
  2. Then on a blank sheet I write 5 or 6 things I will do the next day
  3. Next I give the tasks a priority number and write down the time I will spend on the task
  4. I pull out my schedule for the next day and insert the tasks on my schedule, starting with the top priority task getting done first thing in the day.

The following morning my schedule is sent automatically to my mailbox and I print it out and that is my list to cross off during the day.
