Goal setting or goal getting?
What were you doing 78 days ago?
I know, funny question, but there is a point, you see, today is day 77 of 2009 which means that 78 days ago you were celebrating New Year’s Eve and, like most people, you were setting up your New Year’s Resolutions and goals.

And look, here we are at day 77 already.
Time goes by pretty quick, huh?
But I’m not just mailing you to act as some kind of timekeeper or clockwatcher, rather I wanted to share with something that I’ve been thinking about a lot this week.
You see, it recently dawned on me that, we’re already approaching the end of the first quarter of 2009 and that many of the goals I’d set for myself this year haven’t even been started. In truth, many of them haven’t even been thought about.
It’s not like they’re not important to me. They are, many of them would REALLY change my life for the better if I could bring them to life but, well, I just haven’t seemed to get around to them.
I bet you’re the same right?
I bet you have a huge list of things that you KNOW would absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt change your life for the better, yet you haven’t taken a single, solitary action on them, right?
Weird isn’t it?
For instance in my own life I know that these goals are important to me:
1. One date night a week with my wife – I get so consumed with the business that I often get side tracked and end up working well in to the evening, getting out and spending good time with my wife is essential to me (and her :o)
2. Have All my coaches with full schedules – This is both great for me, my trainers and the clients they train, I know they are good trainers I want them to earn a living from personal training just like me, which in turn builds my business
3. Plan a weekend away with my parents – I really don’t see my parents very often, they live in the UK.
4. Attend a Business networking opportunity once a month – Once again this is about building my business, and spreading the word about who I am and what we do
5. Complete a Mountain bike race – I used to be a competitive cyclist, and until just last month I had not ridden competitively in over 10 years, I love the sport and want to do more of this

Most likely you’ve got a bunch like this too haven’t you?
For example, what financial goals did you set for yourself on New Year’s Eve?
What about your health goals? I KNOW you had a bunch of those!
How about adventures? We all want to travel more and experience more and I bet you had set some goals in this department, right?
Not to mention relationships, education, family and career goals.
I bet you had a bunch, yet where are you with them?
That’s not a rhetorical question, I mean it. Where are you with these goals?
Did you achieve them as you said you would?
More to the point, did you even START them?
I know that I didn’t even BEGIN many of the goals I set at the start of the year. I know they’re important to me, I know they’ll change my life in more positive ways than I can even begin to tell you but for some strange reason, I haven’t even begun to chase them yet.
Like I said, weird.
So look, I’ve got this mad, crazy idea.
I want to help you achieve YOUR goals over the course of this year and I want you to keep ME on track. Sound like a fair deal?
It starts today.
Tell me what your most important, most pressing goals are and I’ll tell you mine and (hopefully) together we can see 2009 through in great style. Write a comment below this BLOG post and lets get this thing moving.
Of course, you could simply ignore this and pass it off as silly but, well, that’ll just mean that the next 77 days are just like the first, and the ones after that, and the ones after that.
I need help to bring my goals to life.
So do you.
So let’s do this!
BTW – I got my idea for this email from my friend Dax Moy, Author of The MAGIC Hundred. I’m glad he kicked me in the butt today : )

I am moving towards my personal fitness goals, though not as aggressively as I would like, because life gets in the way sometimes. The same could be said regarding riding my mare, though we are making progress in some of the other aspects which make horse ownership so rewarding. I am also working methodically towards an educational goal, which will facilitate future professional goals, though I would like the process to be shorter. I have even made progress in a travel goal, as I would like to show my spouse and my kids where I grew up (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy) in that we are beginning to plan a trip abroad for next summer. On balance, though progress is slower than I would like, it is happening. Thanks for the encouragement and goal setting ideas. Though they are not really new, it helps to hear or read them once in a while!

Hi SilverHorse
Thanks for sharing, great to see you are progressing, even if it is small steps it is better than not taking any action at all.

Hi Tim
I have started a few things: didn´t drink alcohol for 30 days! and am determined to keep tighter control on it than before; have lost a couple of kilos and hope to lose a few more; have received details of a journalism course that I hope to do in the summer when I have finished my Open Uni course. So, things are moving forward - not in any very exciting way but slowly, slowly

Hi Val
Not every goal has to be exciting, but I do believe it should have some kind of pull to it. I inspirational element that drives you forward to achievement. Some of my own goals are not that exciting, but are a means to an end that will certainly make a difference to my life.
Good luck with the OU course and the journalism… you’ll be picking apart my awful grammar and spelling :o)

Hi
My goals are to eat healthily and keep up with my training. I manage for a while then i become a bit obsessed -then I back off for a while-hating myself fo backing off!! i generally then go back on trck. My goal is to manage to eat and train healthily without getting obsessed or getting afraid and backing down. (i find it all very confusing!)
